Breaking, beats, community, and 21 years of 808 Breakers. 🔥🎶 This September First Friday, Capitol Modern is teaming up with @the808breakers to celebrate their 21st Anniversary and more than two decades of building community through hip-hop and breaking in Hawaiʻi. What began as a competitive dance crew in 2005 has grown into an ʻohana of artists, mentors, and community leaders using breaking as a vehicle for youth empowerment, creativity, physical health, and connection. This special anniversary celebration brings generations of Hawaiʻi’s breaking community together for a night that celebrates hip-hop as an important part of our contemporary cultural landscape. Here’s what you can look forward to: 🎬 Concrete & Salt Film Screening – Catch the Hawaiʻi-made documentary following three Hawaiʻi-born breakers as they pursue their dreams of competing at the Red Bull BC One Championship while exploring identity, sacrifice, community, and Hawaiʻi’s breaking culture. 🔥 Youth Exhibition Showcase Battles – Watch the next generation take the floor, including youth from programs like Keiki Breaks. ⚡ Impromptu Crew Battles – High-energy exhibition battles featuring standout dancers from throughout the evening. 🎧 Open Cyphers + Live Music – 808 Breakers DJs will keep the night moving with Hip-Hop, Funk, and Breakbeats while dancers of all ages and skill levels are invited into the cypher.
