Experience the captivating sounds of taonga pūoro—the traditional musical instruments of the Māori people of Aotearoa (New Zealand)—while learning about their cultural significance, their connection to ceremony and storytelling, and their role in communicating with the spiritual world. Through live demonstrations and personal insights, Kalama will share the knowledge, artistry, and traditions that continue to shape this revitalized cultural practice today. Kalama Fallau is a Honolulu-based sculptor specializing in traditional Hawaiian weapons, ceremonial implements, and figures. His studies in Aotearoa under a master carver led him to become an active practitioner in the revitalization of taonga pūoro, crafting functional instruments from bone, wood, and shell while deepening his understanding of Māori cultural traditions. 🎟️ FREE admission.
